New York Press Association Names The Ithacan Best College Newspaper in New York State

The Ithacan has been named the Best College Newspaper in New York State for 2016 by the New York Press Association. The award, the NYPA's top collegiate honor, was announced April 8 at the organization's annual convention at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Ithacan Editor-in-Chief Kayla Dwyer ’17, Webmaster Evan Sobkowicz ’17 and Proofreader Ben Gaynor ’17 attended the convention and accepted the award on behalf of the paper. The award was for work produced during calendar year 2016 (Kira Maddox ’16, spring editor-in-chief; Kayla Dwyer ’17, fall editor-in-chief). 
 In addition to being named the best overall college paper in the state, The Ithacan and its staff members received the following awards:

First Place for General Excellence
First Place for Editorials
First Place for Sports Coverage
Second Place for Design
Third Place for Website 

Awards for Individuals
First Place for News Story — Sophia Tulp ’19 and Faith Meckley ’18

Ithacan Named Best in New York State

The Ithacan has once again been named the Best College Newspaper in New York State by the New York Press Association. The award, the NYPA's top collegiate honor, was announced today at the organization’s annual convention at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Ithacan News Editor Sabrina Knight ’16 and Contributing Writer Ramya Vijayagopal ’17 accepted the awards on behalf of the paper. 

The awards are for work produced during calendar year 2013 (Kelsey O’Connor, spring 2013 editor-in-chief; Megan Devlin, fall 2013 editor-in-chief).

In addition to being named the best overall college paper in the state, The Ithacan and its staff members received the following awards:

Ithacan Named Best in New York State

The New York Press Association has named The Ithacan the Best Overall College Newspaper in New York State for 2012 in its annual Better College Newspaper competition. The award was presented April 6 at the NYPA’s annual convention at the Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.  

 The paper also received a Second Place Award for Design and a Second Place Award for Sports Coverage. The awards are for work published during the 2012 calendar year (Aaron Edwards ’12, spring semester editor; Kelsey O'Connor ’13, fall semester editor).

In addition, the following individual Ithacan staff members received awards:
  • Allie Healy ’14, First Place for Feature Story, for "Misconception," February 16, 2012, p. 13.
  • Megan Devlin ’14, First Place for Photography, for the lead photo in “Foreign Focus,” March 29, 2012, p. 28.
  • Sabrina Knight ’16, Second Place for Photography, for “When Push Comes to Shove,” October 11, 2012, p. 28.
  • Candace King ’15, Honorable Mention for Feature Writing, for “Man in the Middle,”April 12, 2012, p. 15.

More Awards for The Ithacan

The Ithacan was awarded the Second Place Mark of Excellence Award for Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper by the Society of Professional Journalists, Northeast Region, at the SPJ Region 1 Convention on April 9 in Providence, R.I.
In addition, junior Whitney Faber received a Second Place Mark of Excellence Award for feature writing at the convention for her story “Behind the Lens,” which appeared in the Sept. 2, 2010, issue of The Ithacan.

On the same day, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., The Ithacan staff was honored with half a dozen awards in the New York Press Association’s annual Better College Newspaper Competition.
Senior Allison Usavage (shown above) won first place for photography for her photograph “Standing Strong,” which appeared in the March 4, 2010, Ithacan.
Senior Michelle Skowronek won third place for feature writing for “Gay Enough?” which appeared in the paper’s April 15, 2010, issue.
In addition, the paper won second place for design, second place for sports coverage, third place for editorial and third place for general excellence.
